Tackle the Trials and Tribulations of Lockdown Studying

Yoh! What an unexpected turn this year has taken. If you had told me six months ago that the world would close down, I would have called you crazy. And yet, here we are…

Tertiary studying is a lot harder than it seems from the outside looking in. Studying under lockdown is an even greater challenge. And studying while under lockdown with COVID19 running rampant takes stress to a-whole-nother level.

Being able to reach out for help is courageous. There are so many different challenges and Dux Student Support is here to help you navigate these.

How to Use Emotional Intelligence While Studying Under Lockdown

The Dux 10/10 Online Curriculum places a large focus on being emotionally intelligent. Mastering emotional intelligence will open doors to powerful learning through resilience, determination, and good communication.

Although we know that high intelligence and a conscientious personality are important psychological traits necessary for academic success, our research highlights a third factor, emotional intelligence, that also helps students succeed,” said Carolyn MacCann, Ph.D., of the University of Sydney and lead author of the study.

It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school.

Emotional Intelligence

The five areas of emotional intelligence are key to coping with the stress of studying under lockdown:

1. Self-Awareness – Knowing what makes you tick is the first step to becoming emotionally intelligent. The insight of what makes you happy and motivated or lethargic and hopeless gives you the power to change. Obviously you’re not expected to be rainbows and cupcakes all day, every day! But you can...

minimise the impact of negative emotions, dodge triggers that set you off, and make the most of your strengths.

2. Self-Regulation – A lot is being spoken about the importance of “self-care” in these uncertain times. Remember, though, that self-care is also being honest with yourself about your negative habits and mistakes. It’s taking ownership of your faults and growing out of them. Self-care is diverting from a negative space to a positive one – creating light and balance, blooming, watering your own flowers. Take care by being gentle but honest with yourself.

While no one is left untouched in this pandemic, only you can control your thoughts and your mind

3. Self-Motivation – This is one area of emotional intelligence which you are going to need to develop now more than ever. Already the transition from school to the tertiary style of studying has been massive, but now you need to draw on the core reason why you want this degree to motivate you.

Attitude, attitude, attitude.  Have a clear to do list each day.  Set time frames.  Take action.

4. Social Awareness

You are not alone in this. For the first time in forever, the whole world is working together(ish) to fight this pandemic. Similarly, the fears and frustrations you are experiencing are not unique. Even the coolest dudes you know are stressing more than ever. And that includes those you are stuck with during the lockdown.

Part of growing up is developing empathy, the ability to understand the feelings of others.

5. Relationship Management – As a highly intelligent academic, you have the skills and the courage to manage your relationships. Sometimes it’s a bit scary, sometimes it is painful, but the most important aspect of relationship management is clear, respectful, two-way communication.

Have a conversation with you family and explain your challenges. Share your adjusted academic goals with your family, so they know what to expect from you. And listen when they share.
