How to Make Friends

Making friends at university or college is an essential part of making these the best years of your life. But it’s also quite a scary, daunting task. Trust us, though, with a little help from Dux student support, it is completely doable, and you will make new friends this semester.

Developing Relationships - Tips from the Top

Here are some guidelines to help you on your way to nurturing good-quality friendships that could well last you your whole life.

Be Yourself

Ja, ja – you’ve heard it a thousand times before. But that’s because it’s true!

There is such a vast group of people attending tertiary institutions that there really is a group for everyone. You may need to invest some time in finding your tribe, but it will be well worth it.

Initiate Friendships

As much as there are plenty of worthy friend-candidates out there, none of them will find you if you hide. Look for opportunities to interact with others – on your walk to class, in the dining hall queue, at the gym – and let your personality shine.

Your lifelong friend may not be in those places, but it helps you to get a feel for how to make small talk and learn more about others. Said friend may be an acquaintance of your coffee station mate.

Extend the invitation instead of waiting for invites.

Be Open-minded

Along with the excitement of sharing your environment with such diverse people is the weirdness! Be careful not to judge a book by its cover – be open to new experiences and friendships.

Be Realistic

Not everyone you get close to will remain your forever friend – and that’s okay. Everyone will, however, leave you with something – fond memories, a valuable lesson, or a warning for the future!

Think of making varsity friends as an anthropological experiment – and discover as much as you can about what makes people tick.

Most importantly – remember two key takeaways:

  1. It is OK to be alone – friends don’t need 24/7 contact to stay in touch.
  2. Good things take time – so relax and enjoy the ride.
