The #MeToo movement, #TotalShutdown marches and more have brought to light how backwards we still are in moving women forwards. It seems impossible that gender equality is still an issue in 2018.
Women’s rights just make sense! As shown in 114 countries through research by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2010:
- Countries with greater gender equality have economies that are more competitive and grow faster.
- Raising female employment to male levels could raise Gross Domestic Product by up to 34%. And yet, the majority of women worldwide have insecure jobs, earn on average 25% less than men, and do most of the unpaid work.
Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame and Goodwill Ambassador for U.N. Women notes, “Fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. This has to stop. For the record, feminism by definition is: ‘The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.’”
This Women’s Month, Dux is focusing on the yin and yang of genders. We will be examining androgynous friendships, genderless pastimes and emotions, and the power of joining forces rather than tearing humanity apart.
